Lead is commonly found in older homes build before 1978. It is important to test chipping paint, dust, soil and water to understand where elevated levels may be. Your local health department may be willing to provide you and your family with an official home lead risk assessment if you ask them. You can also screen your home with a lead screening kit.

The St. Joseph County Department of Health conducts free lead risk assessments in homes with children under the age of 7, homes where pregnant women reside, or homes where a lead-poisoned child has already been identified.
